Rizdvo Church Service on January 7 in Ottawa —

The Planned visit of His Grace Bishop Ilarion to Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Ottawa has been postponed. Please see the details below.

Dear parishioners,

Your parish council wishes you a very Happy New Year, filled with the best of health, hope and happiness.

Today the Ontario Government announced additional COVID-19 restrictions which will take effect at 12:01am on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.  As a result, the parish president, Liza Malarek, in same-day consultations with His Grace, Bishop Ilarion of Edmonton and the Western Eparchy, Locum Tenens of the Metropolitan Cathedral, regrets to announce that Bishop Ilarion’s visit to Ottawa needs to be postponed.

The original purpose of His Grace’s visit to Ottawa was to celebrate the Nativity of Jesus Christ with a Divine Liturgy in our church this Friday, January 7. With the constantly and significantly increasing numbers of infections resulting from the COVID-19 Omicron variant, the parish president and Bishop Ilarion felt it prudent to reschedule his visit to possibly during Great Lent this year. Hopefully by then the current wave of infections will have subsided and air travel will be safer, making it possible for His Grace to meet and mingle with our parishioners in Ottawa as well as in the Ukrainian Orthodox parishes in Montreal, Quebec.

His Grace Bishop Ilarion was truly looking forward to visiting our parish and sincerely regrets not being able to visit at this time. He has assured our parish president that he would like to visit when the weather has improved and the public gathering restrictions have been lifted, hopefully sometime before Pascha (Sunday, April 24, 2022).

And now the good news… The recently announced additional pandemic restrictions by the Quebec provincial government imposed closures of all church services in Quebec with the exception of funerals.  As a result, there is a priest in Montreal who has volunteered to travel to Ottawa and serve the Divine Liturgy in our church this Friday, January 7, at 10am.

On behalf of the parish council, wishing you and your family a happy celebration of Rizdvo! Сhrist is Born! Let Us Glorify Him!
