Council of Bishops Establishes
and Blesses Initiative for Evangelization

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada announces the Initiative for Evangelization, established with the blessing and leadership of the Council of Bishops to strengthen the Church’s mission of proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

From the very beginning of the Church, the mission to evangelize has been entrusted by Christ Himself to the Apostles and their successors. In the Gospel according to Gospel of Matthew, the Lord commands:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them
in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).

This apostolic mandate continues in the life of the Church through the bishops, who as successors to the Apostles guide the faithful in proclaiming the Gospel. Together with the clergy and faithful, the Church carries forward the ministry of reconciliation entrusted to it by Christ. As the Apostle Paul writes in Second Epistle to the Corinthians:

“Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ,
as though God were pleading through us” (2 Corinthians 5:20).

In this spirit, the Council of Bishops has organized an “Initiative for Evangelization” to help coordinate efforts that share the life of the Orthodox Christian faith across Canada.

The initiative is headed by Metropolitan Ilarion and Bishop Andriy, with Rev. Fr. Vasyl Maskal serving as its coordinator.

Recognizing the diverse pastoral realities within the Church and Canadian society, the work of evangelization has been organized into three primary areas of focus:

 

Catechumens

Led by Archpriest Dr. Timothy Chrapko and Rev. Fr. Chad Pawlyshyn, this area focuses on those who are exploring the Orthodox Christian faith and preparing to enter the Church through catechesis and instruction.

 

Canadian-born and Raised Faithful

Led by Rev. Fr. Vasyl Maskal and Rev. Fr. Vasyl Kobrii, this initiative focuses on strengthening the faith of those raised in Canada and helping them live and share their Orthodox Christian identity within contemporary Canadian society.

 

Ukrainian Newcomers

Led by Archpriest Myroslav Shmyhelskyy and Dr. Andrii Tsebenko, this work focuses on welcoming and supporting newcomers from Ukraine who seek spiritual home and community within the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada.

 

The initiative’s work reflects the living witness of the Church throughout history. As John Chrysostom once observed:

“A man who is a Christian cannot hide himself.
The light of a Christian life cannot be concealed.”

Through prayer, teaching, pastoral outreach, and visible Christian witness, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada seeks to shine the light of the Gospel within Canadian society. The work of evangelization is not simply a program but the natural expression of a living faith that invites all people to encounter Christ and the life of His Church.

Cобор Єпископів започатковує та благословляє ініціативу з Євангелізації

Українська Православна Церква в Канаді оголошує про започаткування Ініціативи з Євангелізації, створеної з благословення та під проводом Собору Єпископів з метою зміцнення місії Церкви у проповіді Євангелія Господа і Спаса нашого Ісуса Христа.

Від самого початку існування Церкви місія євангелізації була доручена Самим Христом апостолам та їхнім наступникам. У Євангелії від Матвія Господь заповідає:

«Ідіть, отже, і навчіть усі народи, хрестячи їх
в ім’я Отця, і Сина, і Святого Духа» (Мт. 28:19).

Цей апостольський мандат продовжується в житті Церкви через єпископів, які як наступники апостолів провадять вірних у проповіді Євангелія. Разом із духовенством і мирянами Церква продовжує служіння примирення, довірене їй Христом. Як пише апостол Павло у Другому посланні до Коринтян:

«Отже, ми — посли від імені Христового,
і ніби Сам Бог благає через нас» (2 Кор. 5:20).

У цьому дусі Собор Єпископів організувала «Ініціативу з Євангелізації», покликану координувати зусилля з поширення життя православної християнської віри по всій Канаді.

Ініціативу очолюють Митрополит Іларіон та Єпископ Андрій, а координатором служить о. Василь Маскаль.

Зважаючи на різноманітні пастирські реалії Церкви та канадського суспільства, діяльність ініціативи поділено на три основні напрямки:

 

Оголошені (катехумени)

Під проводом прот. д-ра Тимотія Храпка та о. Чада Павлишина цей напрямок зосереджений на тих, хто досліджує православну віру та готується до входження в Церкву через катехизацію і навчання.

 

Вірні, народжені й виховані в Канаді

Під проводом о. Василя Маскаля та о. Василя Кобрія цей напрямок має на меті зміцнення віри тих, хто виріс у Канаді, та допомогу їм у житті і свідченні своєї православної ідентичності в сучасному канадському суспільстві.

 

Новоприбулі з України

Під проводом прот. Мирослава Шмигельського та д-ра Андрія Цебенка цей напрямок спрямований на прийняття та підтримку новоприбулих з України, які шукають духовного дому та спільноти в Українській Православній Церкві в Канаді.

 

Діяльність ініціативи відображає живе свідчення, яке Церква мала протягом всієї своєї історії. Як зауважив святитель Іоан Золотоустий:

«Християнин не може сховатися.
Світло християнського життя не може бути приховане».

Через молитву, навчання, пастирське служіння та видиме християнське свідчення Українська Православна Церква в Канаді прагне світити світлом Євангелія в канадському суспільстві. Євангелізація — це не лише програма, але природний вияв живої віри, яка запрошує кожну людину до зустрічі з Христом і життям Його Церкви.
