IVAN OHIENKO’S EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY

At the present time, we are in the process of re-evaluating the creative achievements of famous figures of Ukrainian history. One such person is Metropolitan Ilarion (Ivan Ohienko), Professor, founder of Ukrainian cultural studies and education, famous Ukrainian religious, cultural, educational figure, statesman and scientist. This paper is dedicated to the educational activities of this scholar, whose written heritage constitutes over a thousand scientific works.

Today the name of Metropolitan Ilarion returns to the Ukrainian nation, to which he served his whole life. Ivan Ohienko dedicated a sizeable part of his life to educational activities. He was a teacher of the Kyiv commercial institute; founder of a higher elementary school in Brusyliv and its first curator; teacher of the Ukrainian language and literature in Lviv’s Teacher Seminary; senior lecturer of the Department of Ukrainian language and literature and Professor of the Department of the History of Ukrainian culture in the Kyiv Ukrainian State University; organizer and first rector of Kam’yanets-Podil’s’kyj Ukrainian State University, Professor of the Theological faculty of Warsaw University (Poland); and reorganizer of the theological faculty of St. Andrew College, U of M (Canada).

He has gone down in the history of Ukrainian education as the author of the first new epoch of textbooks of the Ukrainian language. Ivan Ohienko supported the idea of creating the national education agenda, which was represented in the “Project of a unified Ukrainian school”. This document is topical at the present day, when we are in the process of recreating a new Ukrainian national system of education.

Ivan Ohienko made an important contribution to the theory of education, where he maximizes the role of the family, native language, church, history, and culture. The focus of Ivan Ohienko’s educational system is “education through history”, i.e. education through data about the incipience, formation and development of the nation-state as well as education of the young generation through the native language. Ivan Ohienko worked very strongly for the scientific substantiation of the methodology of Ukrainian language teaching. Also the didactic views of Ivan Ohienko are of great importance.

The heritage of Ivan Ohienko has an invaluable importance for the development of Ukraine and for the education of its future generations. As a defender of Ukrainian culture, science and the church, he claimed that the national component has to have a preferential treatment in the system of education. Ivan Ohienko was one of the first figures, who laid the foundation of the Ukrainian National System of Education and designed the methodology for the implementation of the tradition of a Ukrainian national pedagogical system for the new historical epoch.

ОСВІТНЯ ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ ІВАНА ОГІЄНКА

Сьогодні ми переосмислюємо творчі здобутки велетів вітчизняної педагогічної думки. До фундаторів української культури й освіти належить яскрава постать видатного українського цер¬ковного, державного і культурного діяча, вченого-філолога, педагога, професора Івана Огієнка. Ця доповідь присвячена освітній діяльності вченого, науковий доробок якого становить понад тисячу творів.

Сьогодні ім’я митрополита Івана Огієнка повертається народові, якому він служив усе життя. Значну його частину він присвятив педагогічній діяльності. Він був викладачем Київського комерційного інституту; засновником вищої початкової школи в Брусилові та її першим куратором; викладачем мови і літератури в учительській семінарії м. Львова; приват-доцентом кафедри мови та літератури та професором кафедри історії української культури Київського українського державного університету; організатором і першим ректором Кам’янець-Подільського українського державного університету; професором церковно-слов’янської мови богословського факультету Варшавського університету (Польща); реорганізатором богословського факультету Манітобського університету (Канада). Він увійшов в історію вітчизняної педагогіки як автор перших в нову добу підручників з української мови. Іван Огієнко підтримував ідею створення національної освіти, яка знайшла відображення в “Проекті єдиної української школи”. Цей документ актуальний і нині, коли ми створюємо національну систему освіти і виховання.

І. Огієнко зробив великий вклад у теорію виховання, де відводить першочергове значення родині, рідній мові, церкві, історії, культурі. У центрі виховної системи І. Огієнка лежить “виховання іс¬торією”, тобто фактами про виникнення, становлення і розвитку свого народу, нації, держави, виховання підростаючого покоління рідною мовою. Івану Огієнку належить чи не найвидатніша роль у справді науковому обґрунтуванні методики навчання грамоти української мови. Окремої уваги заслуговують його дидактичні погляди.

Доробок Івана Огієнка має непересічне значення для розвитку України, для виховання її майбутніх поколінь. Борець за українську культуру, науку, церкву, він стверджував, що перевагу в системі шкільного навчання повинен мати національний компонент. І. Огієнко один з перших у вітчизняній педагогіці заклав основи української національної системи виховання, накреслив шляхи впровадження в нову історичну добу традицій народної педагогіки.
