ДОБА МУЧЕНИКІВ

Боб Гарві пише в журналі “Orthodox Way” (лютий 1999, як подано в Віснику 31-го травня 1999, ст. 3): “Двадцяте століття це доба мучеників”. Він каже, що від 1900 р. більше ніж 35 мільйонів християн постраждали за свою віру. Це щонайменше половина всіх християн замучених від народження Церкви приблизно в р. 33-му.

Минулої неділі ми святкували плід П’ятдесятниці – пришестя Святого Духа, Який і породив Церкву. Ми ж святкували всіх Святих усіх часів – між ними й тих, які покищо ще не проявили себе. Церква не обмежена часом. Вона – вічна. Вона – скрізь і завжди, бо її наповнює Святий Дух – Сам Бог!

Церква також конкретна й специфічна. Вона складається з конкретних людей, які проживають у конкретних обставинах. Сьогодні ми святкуємо особливих Святих – тих, які просіяли на землях України (колись називали ці землі Руссю), як також тих, які просіяли в інших землях, але звідти походять.

Яке ж величезне число таких мучеників належать цьому століттю! Боб Гарві подав число, 15 мільйонів – тих, які згинули через свою приналежність до Христової пастви в колишньому Радянському Союзі. Що за трагедія, що так багато людей невинних загинули!

Але гляньмо на це очима віри. Віра, котра немає мучеників це віра без основ чи переконань. Давня приказка свідчить: “Кров мучеників – насіння Церкви”. Оплакавши трагедію, засудивши несправедливість та зробивши всі можливі зусилля, щоб досячнути справедливості, не забудьмо звеличити живу віру цих мучеників, яка показує силу та динамізм Христової науки.

Посвятімо себе проявляти це бачення в своєму житті. Пригадуючи цих мучеників не ставаймо такими, як ті, що їх замучили. Не намагаймося віддати зуб за зуб. Не робімось жорстокими. Будьмо готові простити. Відкриваймо двері покаяння. Пригадаймо Савла переслідувача, який став Павлом Апостолом через любов Христа, хоч йому дещо перешкоджали послідовники Ісуса, котрі мали страх і гнів до колишнього ворога, і не легко включали його в Христову громаду.

Будьмо ж святі та досконалі, як наш Провідник і Друг і спів-Жертва став святим і досконалим, перетерпівши все в послусі до волі Отця Небесного – Його та нашого.

THE AGE OF MARTYRS

Bob Harvey writes in “Orthodox Way” (February 1999, as cited in Visnyk/The Herald/Le Messager, May 31 1999, p. 3): “The 20^th century is the age of martyrs”. He says that, since 1900, more than 35 million Christians have died for their faith – at least half of all Christians martyred since the beginning of the Church in about 33 A.D., according to an upcoming edition of the World Christian Encyclopedia.

Last Sunday we celebrated the feast of the fruit of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit which gave birth to the Church. We celebrated the Saints of all times – even those who have not yet been revealed to us. The Church is not limited by passing time. It is eternal. It exists everywhere and always for it is full of the Holy Spirit – God Himself.

The Church is also concrete and specific. It consists of concrete and specific persons who live in specific and particular situations. Today we celebrate the particular Saints who were revealed on the lands of Ukraine (or “Rus'”, another name it has been known by since ancient times) as well as those manifested in other lands, but who hail from there.

What an enormous number of such martyrs belong to this century! Bob Harvey gives the number as 15 million – those who were killed because of their adherance to the flock of Christ in the former Soviet Union. What a tragedy that so many innocent people died!

Let us, however, also see this with the eyes of faith. A faith that does not have martyrs is a faith without foundations or convictions. An old saying goes: “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church”. Having lamented over this tragedy, denounced the injustice, and exerted all efforts to ensure that justice is done, let us not forget to celebrate the living faith of these martyrs which shows the power and dynamism of Jesus’ teachings.

Let us recommit ourselves to manifest these teachings in our lives. Recalling all these martyrs let us not become, in our thirst for justice, like those who martyred them. Let us be ready to forgive. Let us open the doors for others to repent. Let us recall Saul the persecuter who became Paul the Apostle because of the love of Jesus, notwithstanding the fear and anger of those called to imitate their Founder, who at first made it difficult for the penitent to find acceptance in His flock.

Let us be holy just as our Leader, our Friend and fellow-Victim became Holy and perfect, having suffered everything in obedience to the will of His (and our) Father in Heaven.

L’ÈRE DES MARTYRES

Bob Harvey écrit dans “Orthodox Way” (février 1999, cité dans Visnyk/The Herald/Le Messager, 31 mai 1999, p. 3) que notre siècle est “l’ère des martyres”. Selon Harvey, plus de 35 millions de chrétiens seraient morts pour leur foi depuis 1900, ce qui constitue plus de la moitié de tous les chrétiens martyrisés depuis le début de l’Église en 33 A.D.

Dimanche dernier nous avons fêté le fruit de la Pentecôte, la venue du Saint-Esprit qui a fait naître l’Église. Nous avons fêté tous les Saints de tous les temps – même ceux qui n’ont pas encore été révélés – parce que l’Église n’est pas limitée par le temps qui passe. Elle est éternelle. Elle existe partout et en tout temps, parce qu’elle est pleine du Saint-Esprit, de Dieu Lui-même.

Mais l’Église est aussi spécifique et concrète. Elle est constituée de personnes réelles vivant dans un contexte historique et national particulier. Fêtons donc aujourd’hui les Saints qui se sont manifestés dans les territoires de l’Ukraine (“Rus”, comme dit un des anciens noms de ce pays) et ceux qui viennent d’ailleurs.

Comme il y a un grand nombre de martyres dans ce siècle! Bob Harvey mentionne le chiffre de 15 millions de personnes ayant péri en Union Soviétique à cause de leur foi. Le sacrifice de tant d’innocents est une horrible tragédie.

Mais il faut aussi regarder avec les yeux de la foi. Une foi qui n’a pas de martyres est une foi sans fondation, sans conviction. L’ancien dicton dit: “Le sang des martyres est la semence de l’Église”. Donc, ayant pleuré pour cette tragédie, ayant condamné ces actes d’injustice, ayant oeuvré pour la justice, n’oublions pas de célébrer la foi vivante qui montre la puissance et le dynamisme de l’enseignement de Jésus!

Pratiquons tous de façon active son enseignement dans notre vie. En regardant tous ces martyres, ne devenons pas dans notre soif de justice comme ceux qui les ont martyrisés! Soyons prêts à pardonner. Ouvrons les portes à la pénitence. Rappelons-nous comment le persécuteur Saul est devenu l’Apôtre Paul par amour pour Jésus, malgré la peur et la colère de ceux qui ont été appelés à L’ imiter.

Devenons des saints comme notre Chef, notre Ami et notre co-victime qui est Saint et Parfait, ayant tout souffert pour obéir à la volonté de Son Père Céleste, qui est aussi le Nôtre.
