МУДРЕЦІ ЙОГО ШУКАЛИ – А МИ?

Всі люди зацікавлені щось довідатись про майбутнє, про те куди прямує їхнє життя. Як часто буває, нам не вистачають традиційні пояснення та заклики вірити без ознак та надзвичайних відкривань. Колись вчащали люди до духовних старців, до досвідчених монахів. Сьогодні їх мало – можливо, що завжди було їх мало. Як тоді так і тепер – зараз може більше ніж будьколи перед тим – радились із гадалками, дивились у гороскопи та в сонники.

Мельхіор, Гаспар і Вальтазар визначались знанням про зорі та ознаки пов’язані з ними. Але вони не були забобонні. Вони не вірили в якийсь механічний світ, де все призначено, а тільки треба винайти код, як розшифровувати рухи великої машини собі на користь. Вони вірили в живу Вищу Мудрість, яка постепенно відкривалась перед ними, кликала їх пірнути все глибше та глибше в її таємниці, які доступні тим, у кого чисте серце. Коли вони побачили чудесну зорю на небесах, вони відчули, що це щось високе, щось глибоке, щось таємниче перед ними відкривається. Вони так прагнуи цього відкриття, що вони вирішили вдатися на дуже небезпечну важку подорож, щоб знайти те, до чого кличе їх дивна зоря.

Їхня дорога привела їх до дому, де лежала Дитинка біля молоденької Матері, а над ними пильнував поважний Старець. Як же могли вони впізнати в цій Дитині, що це Великий Цар, Бог у тілі, Спаситель світу? Чого особливого вбачали вони в Ній? Це – Дух Святий відкрив їм, тому що вони так щиро цього бажали і виявили таку глибоку віру в можливість здійснення їхніх мрій.

Чи шукаємо й ми свого спасіння? Чи шукаємо й ми значіння та ціль нашого життя? Чи ми задовільняємо себе тільки тимчасовими справами. Чи були б ми готові довірити себе такому важкому шуканню, як ці мудреці?

Друзі, той Самий Господь нас жде! У Нього – заспокоєння всіх наших прагнень. Усе від Нього – і для Нього. І ми – від Нього і для Нього. Чому ж ми зволікаємо? Чому ж ми кормимось ріжками призначені для свиней, замість того, щоб бенкетувати з Царем?

Гадалки, сни, гороскопи – цікаві. Та вони тривалого, глибокого знання не приносять. У Божому Слові, у молитві, у свідомому змаганню пізнавати Божої волі в нашому житті – і жити нею – ось тут справжній змисл нашого життя.

Бог – не далекий від нас, як дехто думає. Він до нас промовляє постійно прерізними середниками. Він – з нами! А ми – з Ним. Без Нього – ані крок не відбувається. Застановімся. Пробудімся! Навчімся від Мудреців, як і нам бути мудрецями.

GOD ON EARTH – HUMANITY IN HEAVEN!

I should like to share with you some words from the great Preacher, Saint John Chrysostom, whose Liturgy we celebrate so often, and whose Catechetical Address is read each year at Paschal Matins. He also wrote an address for the Winter Pascha, Christmas, the Nativity according to the flesh of our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ.

As recorded in The Orthodox Herald (December 1998), published in Hunlock Creek, Pennsylvania, by the Very Reverend W. Basil Stroyen and his wife Nina Bohush Stroyen, the Saint called out:

“Come, then, let us observe the Feast! Come, and we shall celebrate the solemn festival!”

“Truly wonderful is the whole story of the Nativity!”

“For this day the ancient slavery is ended, the devil confounded, the power of death is broken, paradise is unlocked, the curse is taken away, sin is removed from us, error driven out, truth has been brought back, the speech of kindliness is diffused and spreads on every side, a heavenly way of life has been implanted on earth.”

“Why is this? Because God is now on earth and humanity is in heaven; on every side all things commingle.”

Can we imagine that? God on earth – among us, one of us! And we, weak, confused, worried humans in heaven?

Perhaps the lack of courage to use our imagination is one of our major problems. The problem is certainly not on God’s side. Look at what lengths He takes to get to us! To let us know that He is with us, that He has never abandoned us – nor shall He ever!

Imagine. Use the spark of faith you have. Dare to hope! Break down the walls you have erected to keep out Love. God is now on earth – and you are in heaven. All things commingle. He and His love and His wisdom are within you and all around. Rejoice – and live!

UNE NUIT SANS PAREIL

À l’occasion de Noël, j’ai reçu une lettre de la famille Melnyk. Dr Alexander de cette famille est membre du Consistoire de notre Église. La lettre contient une citation de saint Isaac le syrien qui vivait au VIIe siècle. Je partage cette citation avec vous:

“C’est la nuit de la Paix, que personne ne fasse de menaces ; c’est la nuit du Plus Doux, que personne ne soit cruel ; c’est la nuit du Plus Humble, que personne ne soit orgueilleux.

C’est le jour de la Joie, ne nous vengeons pas ; c’est le jour de la Bienveillance, ne soyons pas mesquins.

En ce jour de Paix ne soyons pas vaincus par la colère.

En ce jour, le Généreux s’est fait pauvre pour nous ; alors invitons les pauvres à notre table.

En ce jour, nous avons reçu un don que nous n’avons pas demandé, faisons la charité à ceux que nous supplient et nous implorent.

En ce jour, la porte du ciel s’est ouverte à nos prières, ouvrons notre porte à ceux qui nous demandent pardon.

Maintenant le Divin a pris Lui-Même le sceau de l’humanité afin que elle soit ornée du sceau de la Divinité.”

Que ces pensées profondes trouvent un lieu permanent dans nos coeurs, nos esprits et nos âmes! Accueillons l’Enfant-Christ !
